About this book
Abbeychurch, or Self-Control and Self-Conceit, is by Charlotte M. Yonge. The preface says the writer has ventured to launch the first crude attempt once more after it has lain for many years “out of print.” The preface adds that the book is guilty of the error of pointing rather to a transient phase of difficulty than to a general principle.
Lady Merton says that care must be taken what is said to Lizzie about the Hazlebys, since a very little might make it appear that they wished to set her against her step-mother's relations. Lucy asks Helen whether she does not think that home is wherever her father and mother and brothers and sisters are. Helen answers quickly that she meant a settled home. Lucy says she does sometimes wish they were settled, but has been used to wandering all her life, and that they scarcely stay long enough in one place to get attached to it.
