About this book
Unwritten Literature of Hawaii: The Sacred Songs of the Hula is collected and translated, with notes and an account of the hula, by Nathaniel B. Emerson, 1909. A prefatory note explains that earlier research was limited to American Indians until an act of Congress of June 30, 1906 extended it to the natives of the Hawaiian islands.
One section, headed Worship at the Altar of the Halau, says a visitor's first duty while the tabu was on was to do reverence at the kuahu, and prints a prayer to Laka in Hawaiian with footnotes on some of its words, among them a sacred tree and a flowering plant. Another prints the song Hawaii Ponoi with an English translation. A section titled Gesture calls gesture a voiceless speech. A further passage speaks of gathering fronds and maile in honor of Laka.
