About this book
Vailima Letters gathers correspondence addressed by Robert Louis Stevenson to Sidney Colvin, with accounts of daily journeys, home life and writing. A letter describes meeting an unemployed book-keeper who asks for money because the writer is a Scotchman and offers his portmanteau as security. A letter reports work on The Wrecker, the South Sea book and verses, and suggests that the South Sea chapters will need little change for the volume.
A letter describes dictation in Apia, with Lloyd type-writing the conclusion of Samoa and corrections continuing at home. A letter from Vailima records difficulty making progress with St. Ives and the wish to put the work aside for a year.
