About this book

Warm, by Robert Sheckley, is introduced with the line that it was a joyous journey Anders set out on to reach his goal, but look where he wound up. Anders lies on his bed, fully dressed except for his shoes and black bow tie, contemplating the evening before him with a certain uneasiness. Anders is due to pick up Judy at her apartment in twenty minutes, and he has only seconds ago realized that he is in love with her.

Anders hears a voice within his own mind asking for help, and the voice says it does not know how it got here or who it is, only that it wants desperately to get out. At one point the text says there is no true cohesion, no depth, nothing except a web of surface reactions, stretched across automatic visceral movements. Anders' mind tries to add it up, and in desperation the overloaded mind erases the figures, the knowledge and itself.
