About this book
Bad Medicine by Robert Sheckley has Elwood Caswell walking rapidly down Broadway on May 2, 2103 with a loaded revolver hidden in his coat pocket. Caswell tries to think of a single valid reason why he should not kill a man named Magnessen, who had commented on how well Caswell looked. Caswell sprints into the Home Therapy Appliances Store, where just being within such a place gives him an immediate sense of relief.
A clerk says a machine is the new Alcoholic Reliever, built by IBM and advertised in the leading magazines, and that it opens into a television set. Mr. Rath's iron face registers a rather corrugated disgust, and people are described as useless as witnesses. Mr. Follansby asks Mr. Rath whether that Martian machine will treat a Terran homicidal case as homicidal. Caswell says the machine's attempt at therapy forced him into a self-appraisal, a moment of absolute insight in which he could evaluate and discard his homicidal intentions toward poor Magnessen.
