About this book
The author writes that to Oliver Cromwell we owe the first conception of this church as a fitting burial-place for our national worthies. The text says a plain English squire was destined to inaugurate a new epoch in the annals of the Abbey. The text says the nineteenth century has closed and there is little space available in the Abbey for the worthies of the twentieth, but the national feeling still turns instinctively to Westminster on the death of a great man.
A huge sword behind the chair is described as carried before Edward III. on his warlike expeditions into France and Scotland. A walk round the shrine approaches the despoiled tomb of a good Flemish lady, who endeared herself to the hearts of her English subjects by her wise and kindly rule. The text says the design of the whole was by a Flemish artist, while English stone-masons worked on the details.
