About this book

What to Do in Cases of Accidents and Emergencies describes the symptoms in each case and how to treat them on the moment. The book adds a list of the principal poisons which, if taken, require prompt treatment, with their remedies and antidotes, and is designed for family and general use. The preface says the object is to inform the general reader of “What to do, and how to do it,” not only in the first instance, but in those cases where professional assistance cannot be readily obtained.

One entry says apoplexy may be defined as the sudden deprivation of all the vital functions, save those of the heart and lungs. The entry on fainting says it is a condition of total or partial unconsciousness, produced by the feeble action of the heart and lungs, causing an interruption of the requisite supply of blood to the brain. A list of entries with page numbers includes Burns and Scalds, Clothes catching Fire and Collar Bone broken.
