About this book

Mrs. J. B. Dale's Indian Palmistry is dated 1895. Its preface explains that cheiromancy takes its name from the Greek cheiros, the palm, and manteia, to foretell, and notes that the art is called palmistry in a recent Act of Parliament that forbids its practice for gain. The preface cites Coleman's Mythology of the Hindoos. Elsewhere the text quotes a passage on the lines and signatures engraved upon the head or hand, and the author says she does not claim anything new in the work.

Plate I shows a reference hand, followed by numbered entries that give each part a name, a location and an interpretation, such as the Mount of Jupiter at the root of the forefinger and the Mount of Saturn at the root of the middle finger. Later pages describe the line of Life and the Liver line and what their length, breaks and marks are said to mean.
