About this book
Where There Is Nothing is volume one of Plays for an Irish Theatre, by W. B. Yeats. A dedication to Lady Gregory covers two volumes of plays that are in part her own. Thomas Ruttledge asks Paul Ruttledge what creature he is clipping, and Paul answers that it is a Cochin China fowl, "an image of some of our neighbours, like the others."
Mrs. Ruttledge cannot imagine why Paul Ruttledge won't come in and be sociable, and Paul answers that he has something to do here and has to finish this comb. Paul Ruttledge speaks sternly of the old kingdom of the people of the roads, the houseless people, who call themselves tinkers, and says he will put the world on its trial, and himself of yesterday. Paul Ruttledge, looking up, says the crows are his darlings and that he likes their harsh merriment better than the sad cries of the wind and the rushes.
