About this book
Subtitled The Legends of Animals, this is the first of two volumes by Angelo De Gubernatis, then professor of Sanskrit and comparative literature in Florence, and it was published in London in 1872. Its first part, The Animals of the Earth, begins with a chapter on the cow and the bull, whose first section on the Vedic hymns lists topics such as the vault of Heaven as a luminous cow.
One passage discusses three brothers in the Rigveda, Tritas among them, and the horse of Tritas, linked to Indras and Yamas. Another explains a cow that spins as the moon spinning gold and silver during the night, and cites a German proverb about the cow-maid. Long footnotes quote Rigveda verses in transliterated Sanskrit.
