Crois-moi; la brillante couronne
Dont tu flattes ma vanité,
C'est l'amitié qui me la donne,
Sans l'aveu de la vérité.
Fruits légers de ma foible veine,
Cet honneur n'est point fait pour vous
Modestes et connus à peine
Vous me ferez peu de jaloux.
Il est vrai qu'à la noble envie
D'être célèbre après ma mort
Je ne me sens pas assez fort
Pour sacrifier cette vie.
Dans les sentiers d'Anacréon
Égarant ma jeunesse obscure,
Je n'ai point la démangaison
D'entremêler une chanson
Aux écrits pompeux du Mercure,
Et je renonce sans murmure
A la trompeuse ambition
D'une célébrité future.
j'irai tout entier aux enfers.
En vain ta voix douce et propice
Promet plus de gloire à mes vers;
Ma nullité se rend justice.
Nos neveux, moins polis que toi,
Flétriront bientôt ma couronne;
Peu jaloux de vivre après moi,
Je les approuve et leur pardonne.
