Chapitre IV

À mes jeunes camarades, aux équipiers du Club nautique de Chatou

Jadis, la Seine était verte et pure à Saint-Ouen,
Et, dans cette banlieue aujourd'hui sale et rêche,
J'ai canoté, j'ai même essayé de la pêche.
Le lieu semblait alors champêtre. Que c'est loin!
On dînait là. Le beurre, au cabaret du coin,
Était rance, et le vin fait de bois de campêche.
Mais les charmants retours, sur l'eau, dans la nuit fraîche,
Quand, sur les prés fauchés, flottait l'odeur du foin!
Oh! quels vieux souvenirs et comme le temps marche!
Pourtant je vois encor le couchant, sous une arche,
Refléter ses rubis dans les flots miroitants.
Amis, embarquez-moi sur vos bateaux à voiles,
Par un beau soir, à l'heure où naissent les étoiles,
Afin que je revive un peu de mes vingt ans.

Je regarde, en ce bel album paru d'hier,
Ces chats pris sur le vif avec un talent rare.
Jamais il ne fut mieux compris, je le déclare,
Le tigre familier, caressant quoique fier.
Vos félins sont exquis, Henriette Ronner.
Je les admire et, non sans orgueil, les compare
Au charmant angora dont mon logis se pare
Et qui vient de vêtir sa fourrure d'hiver.
Comme vous, pour les chats j'ai tant de sympathies!
Chez moi, j'ai vu régner de longues dynasties
De ces rois fainéants au pelage soyeux:
Et, dans mon calme coin de vieux célibataire,
Toujours les chats prudents, les chats silencieux
Promènent leur beauté, leur grâce et leur mystère.
