Adharanand Finn
Finn moved his wife and three young children from Devon to Iten, a town in Kenya's Rift Valley at eight thousand feet, and spent six months training alongside the runners who dominate world distance racing. Running With the Kenyans is the account, and it is honest that the answer is not any single thing: altitude, yes, but also barefoot childhoods spent running to school, a diet built on ugali, and a culture where running is a plausible route out of poverty. He is a British journalist who has since written about Japanese corporate running teams and about the ultra distance scene.
