Alex Gorelik founded three data companies and was chief technology officer at each: Acta Technology, an extract-transform-load firm bought by Business Objects and now sold as SAP Data Services; Exeros, a data discovery outfit acquired by IBM; and Waterline Data, started in 2013 and taken over by Hitachi Vantara in March 2020, which folded its cataloguing work into Lumada Data Catalog. Earlier he ran Informatica's data quality unit and was an IBM Distinguished Engineer on information integration. The Enterprise Big Data Lake, which O'Reilly published in 2019, rests on conversations with practitioners and executives at over a hundred organisations, and sets out what a data lake is for and where such projects go wrong.
