Marr writes about data and artificial intelligence for managers rather than for engineers, and Big Data in Practice is forty-five short case studies of companies that did something specific with it, from a supermarket loyalty scheme to predictive maintenance on jet engines. He publishes columns at a rate few writers match, advises governments and large firms, and runs a consultancy and a training business. The books are the front of that operation, which is worth knowing when reading the enthusiasm in them. What they do well is translate: an executive who cannot write a line of code can follow every example.
