The Queer Principles of Kit Webb pairs a highwayman turned coffeehouse owner with an aristocrat who wants his father robbed. The Cabot series and the Seducing the Sedgwicks books came earlier. She worked as a lawyer and then taught, and has said the research problem is not whether such people existed but how much the reader is willing to have explained.
