Charles H. L. Johnston

Charles Haven Ladd Johnston (1877–1943) was an American writer of popular biography, born in Washington, D.C. He taught in the English department at Harvard and later served as an instructor in English and lecturer in military history at MIT. He is remembered for his Famous Leaders Series, a long run of collective biographies for young readers that included Famous Cavalry Leaders (1908), Famous Indian Chiefs (1909), Famous Scouts (1910), and Famous Frontiersmen and Heroes of the Border (1913). Several volumes were adopted by the Boy Scouts of America, giving them wide reach among American boy readers in the early twentieth century.
