Dr Amanda Brown
The Prison Doctor was written by a general practitioner who left a comfortable surgery for a young offenders institution and then Wormwood Scrubs and Bronzefield, and most of it is simply what she found there: spice, untreated mental illness, women serving time for offences committed by men they were frightened of, and how much prison medicine consists of treating what the outside world did first. It does not campaign, which is part of why it lands. She stayed in prison medicine for the better part of twenty years and has written two further volumes.
