J. R. Moehringer is an American journalist and memoirist known for close observation of place, family, and the stories people tell about themselves. The Tender Bar: A Memoir recalls his upbringing on Long Island and the neighborhood bar where he found a changing circle of mentors. Grand Central Publishing presents the book as both a coming-of-age memoir and a portrait of community. Moehringer won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing after working as a reporter and correspondent for newspapers including the Los Angeles Times. His later books include the historical novel Sutton, and his collaborative work includes Andre Agassi's Open and Phil Knight's Shoe Dog. Those projects extend the narrative-reporting craft visible in his own memoir.
