Heather Flores, also credited as Heather Jo Flores, is a permaculture teacher, gardener, artist, and community organizer. Food Not Lawns expands the idea of replacing turf with edible gardens into a practical program for neighborhood cooperation. Its chapters cover soil, water, seed stewardship, garden guilds, ecological design, access to land, public events, outreach, and conflict resolution. The book was issued by Chelsea Green in 2006, with over a hundred illustrations by Jackie Holmstrom and a foreword by permaculture writer Toby Hemenway. Flores also helped establish the Food Not Lawns movement in Eugene, Oregon, connecting the book’s gardening methods with seed sharing, mutual aid, and locally organized projects.
