Toby Hemenway brought together ecological writing, teaching, design, and an earlier career in genetics and immunology research. Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture translates ecological principles into practical design for household landscapes. Its second edition, published by Chelsea Green in 2009, explains plant guilds, soil building, water use, habitat, and food forests as connected parts of a resilient garden. Hemenway also wrote The Permaculture City and taught ecological design widely. His scientific background and years developing a rural site in Oregon helped him connect systems thinking with decisions gardeners can test at home.
