Hubert Henderson was a British economist, journalist, public adviser, and Oxford professor. Supply And Demand, published in 1922 with an introduction by John Maynard Keynes, explains economic theory as a practical method for interpreting prices, production, consumption, and market coordination. Henderson had studied economics at Cambridge, where Keynes was among his teachers, and later worked with him at The Nation and Athenaeum. His public career included service on the Economic Advisory Council and as an adviser to the Treasury during the Second World War. In 1945 he became Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford. The book reflects his interest in making economic reasoning intelligible beyond specialist debate, beginning with the division of labor and building toward the forces that influence wages, costs, and prices.
