Judith N. Martin studies how cultural backgrounds influence communication and attitudes between people. She is professor emerita in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State. Her research covers adaptation to unfamiliar cultural settings, ethnic and racial identity, face-to-face interaction and online relationships; the university credits her with more than seventy articles, essays and books. Martin co-authored Intercultural Communication in Contexts with Thomas K. Nakayama. The textbook brings social-psychological, interpretive and critical approaches into a dialectical framework, using history, popular culture, identity and power to examine communication across cultural differences. McGraw Hill continues to issue updated releases of the work, including its current eighth edition.
