Kelly Barnhill
1973
The Girl Who Drank the Moon took the Newbery Medal for a story about a witch who accidentally feeds a baby moonlight and makes her dangerously magical, in a town that leaves an infant in the forest every year for a monster that does not exist. When Women Were Dragons is for adults: in 1955 a great many American women turn into dragons and fly away, and the country decides not to discuss it. The Ogress and the Orphans is about a town persuaded to distrust its neighbours. Barnhill lives in Minnesota and once worked as a park ranger.
