Michigan Historical Reprint Series is a print-on-demand program of the University of Michigan Library, not a writer. The hanging of the crane, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. With illustrations. reprints Longfellow's domestic poem and must be understood through his original authorship. The program reproduces page images from digitized historical volumes on acid-free paper. The poem follows a household from marriage through children, age, and bereavement, using the hanging of a fireplace crane as the emblem of a home being established. Longfellow published it in the 1870s, and later illustrated editions preserved it as an independent gift book. The series label explains the modern physical reproduction, while Longfellow supplies the literary identity.
