About this book
Smoke settles over houses, boats and faces in the industrial town where Hugh Wolfe tends an iron furnace. Rebecca Harding Davis begins this 1861 work of fiction with a narrator looking out on the mills and recalling the family who once occupied the house. Hugh, his father and their cousin Deborah live in damp cellar rooms; Deborah returns from work at a cotton mill to a meal of cold potatoes.
The physical setting gives shape to the book's concern with lives narrowed by exhausting labour. Hugh longs for knowledge, beauty and a chance to help the workers around him, yet his hopes collide with the daily return to the furnace. Deborah shares the hardship and tries to bring him home through the cold fog. Readers interested in fiction about working lives will find a close examination of poverty, frustrated ambition and the distance between comfortable observers and the people they judge.
