About this book
V. M. Hillyer's A Child's History of the World is told in short stories. The title page names the author as Head Master of Calvert School and says the book has many illustrations by Carle Michel Boog and M. S. Wright. The list of stories begins with How Things Started, Umfa-Umfa and Itchy-Scratchy, Fire! Fire!! Fire!!!, From an Airplane and Real History Begins, and goes on to The Puzzle-Writers, The Tomb-Builders and Fairy-Tale Gods.
The telling is plain and often uses comparisons. One passage follows Moses, who leads his people out of Egypt across the Red Sea, spends forty days on Mount Sinai and comes down with the Ten Commandments to find a golden calf. Another passage says the Danes crossed the water to England to take valuable goods, and compares them to bad boys who climb a farmer's fence to steal apples. A third explains how the mummies of Egyptian kings were wrapped in cloth and can now be seen in museums.
