About this book
Ballades & Rhymes takes its pieces from Ballades in Blue China and Rhymes a la Mode. The contents list ballades such as Ballade of Theocritus, Ballade of Cleopatra's Needle, Ballade of Roulette and Ballade of Sleep, among others. The front matter carries a line from A Winter's Tale: I love a ballad but even too well; if it be doleful matter, merrily set down, or a very pleasant thing indeed, and sung lamentably.
One note says that no man since François Villon has been immortalised by a single ballade. Another line says that the Ballade of the Tweed and the Rhymes à la Mode were dedicated to the dearest of kinsmen, a cricketer and angler. A poem titled Ballade Dedicatory, to Mrs. Elton of White Staunton, begins with the painted Briton building his mound and leaving his celts and clay.
