About this book

A Window in Thrums is a book by J. M. Barrie. The contents list gives, among others, chapters called The House on the Brae, A Tale of a Glove and Jess Left Alone. A first-person account says the writer knew the inmates of the house on the brae for many years, including Jamie, the son, who was a barber in London.

The house on the brae held a great kettle, called the boiler, that was said to be fifty years old in the days of Hendry's grandfather. Jess's rarest possession was, perhaps, the christening robe that even people at a distance came to borrow. A passage on Nanny says a husband was bad to her and she kept it secret, and calls that her life summed up.
