About this book
Better Dead is credited to J. M. Barrie. An introduction says "This is the only American edition of my books produced with my sanction". A prefatory passage says "I have a sentimental interest in Better Dead, for it was my first". Among others, the contents list names chapters headed "Engaged?", "Woman's Rights?" and "Dynamiters?".
Chapter I tells of Andrew Riach, whose intention on going to London was to become private secretary to a member of the Cabinet. Mrs. Fawcett is greeted as the president leads her into the room, and the text says "The young man's face, as he looked upon her for the first time, was the best book this remarkable woman ever wrote". A speaker asks "Why does the literary aspirant have such a struggle?" and answers "Simply because the profession is over-stocked with seniors."
