About this book

The discussion of worship describes the tribes of Attica as each having their own particular deities and rites independently of the public worship. The discussion of Athene rejects as palpably absurd an argument based on rearranging the letters of names and demands far stronger proof for identifying the two goddesses under consideration. The account treats the remotest traditions as seeming, under the simpler interpretation, to make the goddess originally an agricultural deity.

A note describes oligarchy as the first form of government to rise above monarchy's ruins even in states that did not maintain cavalry. A note cites Aristotle's inclusion of the ability to train horses among the advantages of wealth.
