About this book

Baldy of Nome is a book by Esther Birdsall Darling. A dedication reads “To My Mother whose unfailing kindness to all animals is one of my earliest and happiest memories”. A reply to a question about someone's mother says she does the washing for the Camp, helps with the dishes and sews when she can get a job at it. A speaker says they could make some arrangement with a mother about the dog, taking a sort of an option on him, letting him stay with the listener and paying a certain sum for the privilege of buying him outright before the stampede actually begins.

A speaker says “I had quite forgotten Birdie,” and the text adds that she recalled with regret the habit of a half grown stag-hound of dropping bits of food into the corral, between the wires, to make friends of the little ones. Moose Jones whitens visibly under his thick coat of tan at the insulting manner of his enemy, and his hatred culminates in a desire to show his contempt for Mart and his predictions.
