About this book

Mary Austin wrote The Trail Book, with illustrations by Milo Winter. The contents list chapters titled, among others, How Oliver and Dorcas Jane Found the Trail, What the Buffalo Chief Told, and Dorcas Jane Hears How the Corn Came to the Valley of the Missi-Sippu. The dedication is to Mary, a niece, in the hope that she may find through the trails of her own country the road to wonderland.

A listener answers Moke-icha, saying that in his part of the country, long before there were Pale Faces, there were trade trails and graded ways, and walled ways between village and village. A speaker says We called ourselves Tallegewi, and our trails were old before the buffalo had crossed east of the Missi-Sippu, the Father of all Rivers. The text lists three different opinions as to where the first men in America came from, the third being that they came from Asia across Behring Strait and the Aleutian Islands, and says the third theory seems the most reasonable.
