About this book

Bunyan Characters (3rd Series), by Alexander Whyte, carries the heading Lectures Delivered in St. George's Free Church Edinburgh. Chapter I, titled The Book, says John Bunyan's Holy War was first published in 1682, six years before its illustrious author's death. Chapter I cites Lord Macaulay's word that if the Pilgrim's Progress did not exist the Holy War would be the best allegory that ever was written.

The text calls on our excellent historian's own words about the wall of the town: it was well built, and the walls could never be broken down nor hurt by the most mighty adverse potentate unless the townsmen gave their consent thereto. The text says Mr. Prywell was always a jealous man, adding that great lovers are always jealous men. A passage says that if it had cost us all we could ever do or suffer, we could have come to terms with our Prince far more easily, but that our forgiveness should be absolutely free is what so staggers us.
