About this book
Children Above 180 IQ Stanford-Binet: Origin and Development is a study by Leta S. Hollingworth of children with exceptionally high test scores. Its foreword says Hollingworth prepared a manuscript on the subject shortly after 1924. A passage signed by Hollingworth says that the work took hundreds of hours of the time of the children, their parents and their teachers over a period of twenty years, and that everything is presented that is consistent with scientific interest and the preservation of personal privacy.
Part I, Orientation, opens with a chapter on the concept of intellectual genius, which looks at definitions of genius and admits that it may never be settled whether the children studied are geniuses. Another passage, about a boy called E, follows his schooling and his entry to Columbia, where he was hazed by the sophomores for refusing to wear a prescribed necktie, and where in September 1921 he was himself a sophomore at 13 years 3 months.
