About this book

The Chums of Scranton High on the Cinder Path is credited to Donald Ferguson. The contents list names chapters called The Five Nut Foragers, Talking of Ghosts and The Great Marathon Race, among others. A character named Hugh says that a fellow would save considerable ground if he left this same road half a mile below and cut across by way of the Juniper Swamp trail.

The text says the fifteen-mile Marathon race is an unusually long distance for boys to run, and hardly advisable under ordinary conditions. Hugh tells Claude that there is a way to save him, if only he keeps his head about him, and that below them there is a ledge where they must plant their feet and hold on. The text has Hugh glimpse the quarry on one side of him, with his thoughts flying backward to the strange events so recently happening there.
