About this book
Derues is by Alexandre Dumas, Pere, from the Eight Volume set "Celebrated Crimes" of 1910. About a score of small boys, chattering, pushing, and tumbling over one another, issue from one of the religious schools of Chartres on a September afternoon in 1751. Pierre stands on a pile of books with his neck in a running knot fastened by a cord to a horizontal bough, and asks whether the books are firm.
Edouard de Lamotte, loving his mother as much as she loved him, becomes uneasy at receiving no visits, and Derues writes to him that he has at length some good news but that Edouard must not tell his mother he has betrayed her secret. In legal wording, the text says that the said Sieur de Lamotte the younger died of poison on the fifteenth day of February last, at nine o'clock in the evening, in the arms of the aforesaid Derues, who affected the deepest grief.
