About this book

Edge of the Jungle is by William Beebe, who is described as Honorary Curator of Birds and Director of the Tropical Research Station of the New York Zoological Society. A note says this second series of essays follows those in Jungle Peace and that, with the exception of A Tropic Garden, which refers to the Botanical Gardens of Georgetown, all deal with the jungle immediately about the Tropical Research Station.

The writer says that in the beginning there were three white men and four servants. The essays describe the Army Ants as carnivorous, predatory, militant nomads and the Termites as vegetarian scavengers, sedentary, negative and provincial. The text says that to see a big wax bug flying with trailing ribbons slowly from tree to tree in the jungle is to recall the streaming trains of a flock of peacocks on the wing.
