About this book

Selections from Previous Works comes with remarks on Mr. G. J. Romanes’ Mental Evolution in Animals and A Psalm of Montreal, by Samuel Butler. The preface says the pages were delayed some weeks to give Mr. Romanes an opportunity of explaining his statement that Canon Kingsley wrote about instinct and inherited memory in Nature, Jan. 18, 1867. A speaker tells the person addressed, ‘You are a bad and dangerous person, and stand branded in the eyes of your fellow-countrymen with one of the most heinous known offences.’

A speaker says that, had not the capital punishment for consumption been abolished, he should certainly inflict it now. The text weighs a statement as partly correct and partly not, and says Buffon was a free-thinker. A visit to a chapel is told in which the sacred image of the Madonna is contained; the image itself is only exposed to public view on great occasions, and is believed to have been carved by St. Luke the Evangelist.
