About this book

Extracts from Adam's Diary, Translated from the Original Ms is by Mark Twain, whose note says he translated a portion of the diary some years ago. A diary entry headed Monday says the new creature with the long hair is a good deal in the way and is always hanging around and following the writer about. One entry describes someone trying to study out why the animals called lions and tigers live on grass and flowers, when, as she says, the sort of teeth they wear would indicate that they were intended to eat each other.

A Thursday entry says that somebody was made out of a rib taken from the diarist's body, which the diarist finds at least doubtful, if not more than that. One entry says the diarist felt justified in securing the credit of the discovery by attaching his name to it, and hence called it Kangaroorum Adamiensis. A Tuesday entry complains that the whole estate is littered with execrable names and offensive signs, among them THIS WAY TO THE WHIRLPOOL and THIS WAY TO GOAT ISLAND.
