About this book

A confrontation outside the Paris Bourse turns a husband's working day into a test of trust. Monsieur de Maulincour tells Jules Desmarets that his wife may be involved in a dangerous affair and claims to have recognized Ferragus under another identity. Jules listens with distress, but asks for evidence. This scene gives the novel its close attention to suspicion, reputation and the strain of judging someone dearly loved.

Honoré de Balzac's 1833 novel opens with an account of thirteen men bound by secrecy and mutual loyalty. The preface also explains the title's connection to a French workers' fraternity and places the story within The Thirteen. These accounts of hidden associations sit beside the intimate worries of a married household. Readers can approach the book as a study of how private attachments and concealed influence complicate social life, with the search for reliable knowledge driving its mystery.
