About this book
Finger Plays for Nursery and Kindergarten by Emilie Poulsson says in its preface that the eighteen finger-plays in the book have been introduced to their especial public and much used in homes, though perhaps more in kindergartens. The preface adds that some of the plays are for the babies in the nursery, while others are more suitable for older children.
The preface quotes Froebel as saying that what the child imitates, he begins to understand. Lines about five little mice on the pantry floor have them seeking for bread-crumbs or something more, while the big round eyes of the wise old cat see what the five little mice are at. Lines about Santa Claus have the tiny reindeer trotting and bringing Good Santa Claus near, with stockings to be hung.
