About this book
Hermann Lange's book is described on its title page as a theoretical and practical guide to the art of translating English prose into German. This is the third edition, with the German spelling revised. The transcriber notes that German words were originally set in Fraktur type.
The pages sampled consist of English passages followed by numbered notes that give German words and advice on how to render them, with cross-references to sections and notes elsewhere in the book. One passage is headed 'The Drama of the French Revolution of 1848'. Another shows a performing animal begging from a crowd, and a third quotes Prof. G. Wilson on the human eye. Notes such as 'Form a noun of the present participle of the verb sprechen' show the kind of guidance given.
