About this book

Riverbanks, storm clouds and an untidy guest room share space in Rabindranath Tagore's letters from 1885 to 1895. Glimpses of Bengal gathers observations written at places including Shelidah and Shazadpur, with the writer often watching the landscape from a houseboat. A broad sandbank gives way to village groves across the water, while a sudden storm turns an offer of hospitality into a hurried effort to clear a room for a visiting magistrate.

These letters also record the movement of Tagore's thoughts between writing, friendship and ordinary pleasures. A postmaster's evening visit interrupts his plans to read Kalidas, then leads him to recall the room where he wrote his story about a postmaster. Reflections on approaching thirty sit beside descriptions of boats and changing weather. Readers interested in Bengal's river landscape or the everyday circumstances of literary work will find both in this intimate correspondence.
