About this book

The front of the book lists works by Sir Rabindranath Tagore, among them Gitanjali, Fruit-Gathering and Stray Birds. In the text, one passage speaks of an India that tried to live peacefully and think deeply, and of the moment 'the Nation of the West' burst in, driving its machinery into the soil.

In another passage Europe is called supremely good where her face is turned to all humanity and harmful where it turns only upon her own interest. A later passage raises the question of race amalgamation and political unity, calls social restrictions still tyrannical, and excuses a man who hides heterodox ideas for fear of being socially ostracized as one forced to live a life of untruth.
