About this book

An April field in Worcestershire introduces Bob Tryst, a laborer who finishes sowing before answering Derek's question about a notice he has received. Derek's angry response breaks the calm of the rural scene. John Galsworthy then follows Felix Freeland, an author preparing to meet his brothers about family affairs. Their positions in government and industry give the discussion a wider social setting.

Published in 1915, the novel places questions of agricultural work and independence within the concerns of an English family. Felix blames industrial life and official authority for the country's troubles, while taking pride in his ability to observe them. At a later dinner, guests enthusiastically discuss how cheaply laborers might live on brown bread, potatoes and margarine. Their pleasure in this proposed solution, amid champagne and a substantial meal, makes class assumptions visible through satire.
