About this book
An expected birth brings Camylott village to an unusual hush on an April morning in 1676. Neighbours discuss the young Duchess, the Duke's kindness to his tenants, and the wealth and titles awaiting their child. Alongside this affectionate excitement, one mother wonders why another child should inherit hardship instead. Frances Hodgson Burnett's historical novel, published in 1897, places the privileges of noble life beside questions about fairness and character.
Court gossip and personal feeling share the pages. The Earl of Dunstanwolde introduces his future wife to the Duke of Osmonde, whose response reveals a painful attachment. During the carriage ride home, the Earl speaks gratefully of his happiness while the younger man reflects on his assumptions about age and love. Readers interested in historical romance will find formal social encounters charged with private disappointment, and a close examination of the obligations that accompany rank.
