About this book
History of the Wars, Books V and VI is by Procopius, with an English translation by H. B. Dewing, first printed in 1919 as the third of seven volumes. Book V is headed The Gothic War, and Book VI continues it. The volume also carries an index and a plan of the walls and gates of Rome.
One passage tells of Amalasuntha, who sends a ship to the harbour of Epidamnus and stays at Ravenna to strengthen her rule. Another introduces Theodatus, a son of Amalafrida, Theoderic's sister, who is well read in Latin literature and Plato, has no experience of war and is devoted to money, and who plans to hand Tuscany to the Emperor Justinian. In another, Belisarius receives a public vote of praise from the Romans, and his friends ask him privately what he based his judgment on.
