About this book
How to Make a Shoe by John Parker Headley is set in short rhyming lines, among them lines saying that sheep is used for lining nice, when goat alone would not suffice. The introduction says the author was prompted to make this offering to the craft and the public, which may become useful as a text-book, or family-book, for those who may feel interested in making or wearing shoes.
Lines on measuring have the subject, seated on a chair, with his measure taken fair, while the Artist views the foot and takes the length by measuring it from heel to toe. Lines on sewing tell the reader to pull through one thread and tie it tight on the inside, and to begin to sew the other quarter, close at the vamp. Lines on the welt say to take out the welt with a knife to suit and not cut the upper, as this same thing is done to the boot and neither has to suffer.
