About this book
Writing from a cell in Modesto, Harry Granice describes his escape from a threatening crowd after a shooting in December 1874. His account opens with his surrender to Sheriff Meany in Merced and his growing fear that the officers will fail to protect him. Awaiting trial, Granice argues that he fled the crowd because his life was in danger, and sharply questions the sheriff's decisions.
Persistent fog turns the surrounding country into both shelter and a source of confusion. Granice crosses creeks, watches railway tracks and hides from passing riders while struggling with hunger and thirst. In one encounter, he uses a shovel handle to bluff an armed stranger. The narrative combines an account of physical hardship with a prisoner's defense of his actions. It offers readers a close view of fear, distrust and the uncertain protection of local authority through the words of the man seeking to explain his escape.
